Frequently Asked Questions

Is a 3 a passing score for AP?
Yes. College Board defines a 3 as "Qualified," which is widely considered the minimum passing score. Most colleges grant credit or placement for a 3, though selective universities may require a 4 or 5. Always check your target school's AP credit policy.
Is a 2 on AP exam passing?
A 2 is rated "Possibly Qualified" by College Board and is generally not considered passing for college credit purposes. The vast majority of colleges require at least a 3. However, a 2 still shows you attempted a college-level course, which can look positive on applications.
Is a 70% a 5 on AP?
Not necessarily. AP exams are not graded on a simple percentage scale. The composite score (0–100) is mapped to 1–5 using score thresholds that vary by subject and year. On many exams, a 70% composite can earn a 4 or even a 5, depending on how the curve is set that year.
Is a 60 passing for an AP class?
Your AP class grade (set by your school) and your AP exam score (1–5, set by College Board) are completely separate. A 60% class grade may or may not meet your school's passing threshold, but it has no direct bearing on your AP exam score. Use the calculator above to estimate your exam score independently.
